At 03:41 local time on 6 November, a small earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred in north-western Iran, about 13 kilometres south-west of the town of Marand and 60 kilometres north-west of Tabriz. Seven CHARNET stations recorded it, from Antarashat in Syunik, 121 km away, to Shaghik in the far north-west of Armenia, 354 km away.
This time the epicentre lies outside our network, to the south of Armenia, so all our stations see it from one side. That makes the location less precise than for earthquakes inside the country: the uncertainty of our solution is about 8 km.
The record below shows how the waves travelled north into Armenia. At Antarashat, 121 km away, the S-wave arrived 14 seconds after the P-wave; at Nerkin Jorja, 198 km away, the gap was 23 seconds; at Deghdzavan in Tavush, 332 km away, it had grown to 38 seconds.
Vertical component, 1–15 Hz, 150 seconds of record (23:41:40–23:44:10 UTC), shown 3× faster. Blue — the P-wave, gold — the S-wave. Sound: the Antarashat record played 15× faster. Location and magnitude: IGES, CHARNET network.
North-western Iran lies in the same zone of collision between the Arabian and Eurasian plates as Armenia, and the Tabriz region has a long history of strong earthquakes. Small events like this one help us test how well our network locates earthquakes beyond its borders, especially to the south, where Antarashat and our other southern stations are the first to hear them.
