In just a few years the institute, together with the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Administration, has built CHARNET: a modern seismic and GNSS network that listens to the Earth across Armenia. Here are its main achievements in numbers and milestones.
Notable records
About 8,400 km away; the waves reached Armenia in less than eleven minutes.

- Nine stations online
CHARNET becomes a permanent network of nine stations streaming data to Gyumri. A joint study on large earthquakes appears on the cover of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.
- The first strong event
The network records the ML 4.8 earthquake in Lori and its aftershock.
- The centre opens in Gyumri
The Armenian–Chinese seismic and GNSS network centre opens with the Administrator of the China Earthquake Administration. The next day the President of Armenia receives the delegation.
- 100 earthquakes in five months
Data reach Gyumri over satellite and 4G links, the first use of satellite communication in Armenian seismology; artificial intelligence helps process them.
- A joint research project
A joint Armenian–Chinese project on the seismic hazard analysis of major earthquakes in Armenia is approved.
- Schoolchildren at CHARNET
The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport and the Governor of Shirak visit the centre with pupils from the region.
- Hearing Tibet and Japan
Our stations record great earthquakes thousands of kilometres away, from the Tibetan Plateau to a deep earthquake under Japan.
- Visiting professor in Beijing
Jon Karapetyan completes his visiting professorship at IGP-CEA: three joint papers submitted and a common roadmap from monitoring to seismic hazard and risk.
- Opening our stations to everyone
The series Stations of IGES, an interactive station map, a gallery of earthquake sounds and the station cameras bring the network closer to the public.
