A centre for the joint Armenian–Chinese seismograph and GNSS network has opened at the institute in Gyumri, in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador to Armenia, Li Xinwei. Chinese specialists took part in field surveys to choose the station sites.
According to Director Jon Karapetyan, the stations can record earthquakes up to 15,000 km away, and the centre is the first in the region to run an earthquake early warning system. “Such complex stations are one-of-a-kind in the region,” he said.
