On Sunday morning, 8 November, at 11:04 local time, a small earthquake occurred in the Ashotsk community of Shirak province, about 30 kilometres north of Gyumri. With a magnitude of ML 1.7 it was far too weak to be felt, but five CHARNET stations recorded it and located the epicentre at 41.06° N, 43.88° E, at a depth of about 10 km.
The nearest stations were Shaghik and Gyumri, only 25 and 29 km away. There the S-wave arrived less than 4 seconds after the P-wave. At Byurakan and Deghdzavan, almost 90 km away, the gap had grown to 9–11 seconds. The farther the station, the longer the gap between the two waves: this is how a network finds an epicentre.

between the P- and S-waves
The record below follows the waves at three stations. At Shaghik the two waves arrive almost together; at Gyulagarak they are 7 seconds apart; at Deghdzavan, 89 km away, almost 11 seconds. Press play to hear the earthquake as Gyulagarak recorded it, sped up six times.
Vertical component, 1–15 Hz, 50 seconds of record (07:04:29–07:05:19 UTC), shown 2× faster. Blue — the P-wave, gold — the S-wave. Sound: Gyulagarak station, sped up 6 times. Location and magnitude: IGES, CHARNET network, 5 stations, epicentre accuracy about 0.3 km.

The north of Shirak, near the borders with Georgia and Turkey, is one of the active areas that our stations watch closely. Small earthquakes like this one are common there and help us understand the faults of the region.
