An earthquake cannot be predicted to the hour, but each family can prepare. These steps, the same as those taught by civil protection services worldwide, save lives.
- Secure your home
Fix tall furniture, shelves and the water heater to the walls. Keep heavy objects low.
- Know your safe spots
In every room find a sturdy table or an inside wall, away from windows and glass.
- Plan with your family
Agree where to meet after an earthquake and how to contact each other.
- Prepare a kit
Keep an emergency bag ready: see the checklist below.
- Drop, cover, hold on
Drop to your hands and knees, take cover under a sturdy table and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay inside
Do not run outside during shaking. Most injuries happen from falling objects and glass near doors and walls.
- If you are outside
Move to an open place, away from buildings, trees, power lines and bridges.
- If you are driving
Stop in an open place, away from bridges and overpasses, and stay in the car.
- Check for injuries
Help others, give first aid, and do not move seriously injured people unless they are in danger.
- Expect aftershocks
Strong aftershocks can follow. Leave damaged buildings carefully, using the stairs, not the lift.
- Gas and electricity
If you smell gas, open windows, do not use flames or switches, and leave. Turn off the gas if you can.
- Use the phone wisely
Call 112 only for emergencies. Send short text messages to family to keep lines free.
