Construction of the geomagnetic observatory in Gyulagarak was completed in September 2020. Armenia built the observatory, and the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences supplied the equipment. For the non-magnetic pavilions the institute developed its own composite fibreglass materials.
The observatory meets INTERMAGNET standards. It records magnetic storms that affect radio communication, satellite navigation, power lines and pipelines, and is planned to host a joint laboratory and training for Armenian specialists.
